Reflections on open water swimming

Swimming in the sea is more than a physical activity; it embodies a journey into the unknown, mirroring life's uncertainties. Despite being a poor swimmer, I am captivated by the sea’s mysterious and transformative qualities.

In 2023, I spent time engaging with and photographing a group of open water swimmers in Hythe Bay, Kent. Formed as a result of the pandemic restrictions, they swim in all seasons, all weathers embracing the elements and finding support in each other. It lead to the creation of their WhatsApp group ‘Share Swim Love’ to help co-ordinate their meets and activities. The swimming community continues to soar as awareness of the physical benefits of open water swimming become common knowledge, but also its significant positive impact on mental health.

Documenting their experience with nature is juxtaposed with a pressing concern; the ongoing sewage water crisis affecting UK coastlines. Regular alerts from the Environment Agency expose the harmful pollution caused by private water companies, threatening our waters and the future of safely swimming in our Seas.
