Our meeting took place at Standard Quay in Faversham on a cold and notably windy morning in late September. Standard Quay is a historic former commercial port positioned on the navigable arm of The Swale, traces its origins in maritime trade to AD 699. Today, following regeneration efforts it serves as a hub for local business while maintaining its function as an active working quay. 

The chosen portrait was taken in front of Customs House, where it offered partial shelter from the prevailing wind. Helen faced into the breeze, a gesture that seemed to capture her direct and pragmatic nature observed during our time together. The solid white brickwork provided a classic backdrop, its clarity accentuating her lateral profile. Positioned in the lower two-thirds of the frame, she appears grounded, a composition that suggests both resilience and opportunity. 

During our conversation Helen spoke with conviction about the challenges facing local farming and industry. Her words carried a sense of care and concern reflecting her deep commitment to the community she represents. When I asked why she chose politics, she explained that it was where she felt she could make the greatest difference.
